Black Heron Press published its first title way back in 1984. Since then, it has consistently published from two to six titles every year. The press primarily publishes literary fiction, both adult and young adult (YA), as well as select memoirs, poetry and non-fiction.

Books published by Black Heron have won or been finalists for a number of national and regional awards, including the American Book Awards, the Hopwood Award for Major Fiction, and the Drue Heinz Literature Prize.

In addition, Black Heron Press gives the Black Heron Press Award for Social Fiction. The recipient of this award is selected by the editors and is given only occasionally.

Black Heron Press is an indie publisher located in Seattle, Washington. They are distributed through Independent Publishers Group (IPG). Black Heron Press books are available from Ingram, Baker and Taylor, Brodart and most regional wholesalers.

Unsolicited submissions OK. No agent required.

Black Heron is looking for literary fiction, both adult and young adult (YA), as well as select memoirs, poetry, and non-fiction They do not accept emailed submissions or queries. Black Heron Press prints 4-6 books per year. They publish primarily literary fiction.

If you think Black Heron will be a good fit for your title, go ahead and send it in, but you might need a carrier pigeon because Black Heron only take submissions the old-fashioned way: Par Avion.

Do not send complete ms. Besides, that would be very expensive. Send just a synopsis and a few sample chapters. Don’t forget the SASE.

Author Spotlight: Katie Christine Bishop

Katie Christine Bishop grew up in Southern California surrounded by family pets. She earned her bachelor’s degree at UCLA, then a master’s degree at the University of Southern California. Following the loss of her mother, Ms. Bishop and her husband moved to Seattle where she began writing fiction.

Katie Christine Bishop is the author of Love & Murder, by Black Huron Press. Her novel won the 2025 Black Heron Press Award for Social Fiction.
