Apprentice House is the nation’s first entirely student-managed book publisher. Apprentice House is an indie publisher, not a university press.

As a program within the Communication and Media Department at Loyola University Maryland, it is driven by student work conducted in four courses: Introduction to Book Publishing, Manuscript Evaluation & Development, Book Design & Production, and Book Marketing & Promotion.

Therefore, students in these courses serve as staff in Apprentice House’s acquisitions, design, and marketing departments, respectively. After students leave the courses, AH professors and AH student staff sustain the on-going operation of the company and market its frontlist and backlist titles.

Apprentice House Publishing – Submissions

Unsolicited submissions OK. No agent required.

Apprentice House seeks manuscripts for review. They are open to most anything, fiction: literary fiction, novels, short story collections; non-fiction, general non-fiction. They are not looking for poetry, manuscripts marketed at the children’s or self-help markets, or works that have been previously self-published.

Submissions are open every year from October to February. This season’s submissions are open thru February 1, 2026.
