Bess Press is committed to publishing authors, illustrators, and creators of diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

Bess is looking for adult non-fiction titles of all sorts. Trade publications. As long as it’s about Hawai’i and Pacific Islands, they’re interested. They are not looking for books outside the Pacific Island region. Bess also publishes children’s. Photography, as well.

Bess currently accept submissions online only.  Please fill out their online submission form. Then send to: submissions@besspress.com.

Meet the Editors

Benjamin “Buddy” Bess & Dr. Ann Rayson (Co-Founders) Buddy and Ann began Bess Press in 1979 by developing textbook resources for elementary education. Over time those resources grew into a broader range of publications that focused meeting the needs of students and educators within Hawai’i and, eventually, greater Oceania. Their vision of producing books that broaden and amplify the voices and communities of Hawai’i remain the cornerstone of Bess Press’s mission today.

David DeLuca (Publisher + COO) David serves as the strategic and operational leader of the publishing company, responsible for guiding the overall vision, growth, and health of the organization across its core divisions: Trade Publishing, Educational Publishing, Retail, and Distribution.

Kristen Namba Reed (Director of Publishing) Kristen plays a key leadership role in shaping and executing the publishing vision of Bess Press Inc. Kristen oversees all aspects of the trade publishing process—from acquisitions to editorial, production, design, and launch strategy.
