There are only a handful of university publishers on our list because by design college presses operate by different rules. There are some we thought fit in, however, with a little less stringent submissions process.

Acre Books is based in the English dept. at the University of Cincinnati. While Acre Books is not an old press, it has been around since 2016.

Acre publishes approximately six to seven titles per year. They work closely with the sales and marketing team at the University of Chicago Press, and are distributed by the Chicago Distribution Center. They are also publishing partners with Seagull Books.

Titles are often in review at such major publications as:

– Publishers Weekly
– The New York Times
– The Boston Globe
– The San Francisco Chronicle
– The National Book Review

and numerous other publications and podcasts.

Acre’s accolades include finalist honors from the PEN/Hemingway Award, the Lambda Literary Awards, the Janet Heidinger Kafka Prize, PEN/Bingham Prize for Debut Short Story Collection, and silver and gold medals from the Foreword INDIES and Independent Publisher Book Awards (IPPYs).
