Unsolicited submissions welcome. No agent required.

Blue Cactus Press accepts rolling submissions from people from historically marginalized groups. They seek writing that is fundamentally anti-racist, two-spirit and LGBTQ+ affirming, and which sparks dialogue about what it means to get free.

Blue Cactus publishes fiction: horror, romance, or sci-fi/fantasy works. We’re also interested in graphic novels, essays (individual or collections), and non-fiction works. Poetry, too.

Submissions should be emailed to BlueCactusPress@gmail.com and addressed to Chris Vega, Publisher.

  1. I’m the leader of a writers group. Before I share the information about Blue Cactus Press with all of my group’s members, I’d like a clarification. The guidelines above say, “Blue Cactus Press accepts rolling submissions from people from historically marginalized groups.”

Now, if someone posted a Help Wanted sign that said, “We accept applications from white people,” everyone would assume that they refuse to hire Black, Hispanic, Asian-American, or Native American people, so my wife couldn’t apply because she’s a dark-skinned Latina. Likewise my nephew, nieces, and in-laws couldn’t apply because they’re also brown Latinos.

So based on your writers guidelines, it seems my wife can submit, because she’s a Hispanic immigrant with dark skin, but no white people should submit, because Blue Cactus Press refuses to publish work on account of their race, is that correct? I mean, if we saw a publisher whose submission guidelines say, “We accept rolling submissions from white people,” authors would assume that they’ll refuse to publish books by Black authors, Hispanic authors, Asian-American authors, or Native American authors, so my wife couldn’t apply because she’s a dark-skinned Hispanic. So if, as your guidelines suggest, you refuse to publish works by white authors–do you think that kind of racial discrimination is ok?

I’m also curious about the next sentence, “They seek writing that is fundamentally anti-racist, two-spirit and LGBTQ+ affirming, and which sparks dialogue about what it means to get free.” So… I assume no women who are straight and cisgender should submit, because you won’t publish them, and no straight cisgender men should submit either. That kind of discrimination based on race and sex has no place in the 21st century. But perhaps your guidelines were just poorly worded; when you wrote, “Blue Cactus accepts submissions from…” did you not mean only that group of people?

    • I know in other countries that they say those things because they got grants. Could be the same here. Those guidelines are from the publisher, not me. As far as I am concerned, it’s all about the writing. Thanks for your time.
