About Batis Books
Batis Books is a new Scottish publisher with a focus on Southern African books. Launch date is early 2026.
Batis Books, an independent small press founded by South African writer and publisher Nick Mulgrew, will publish at least six books a year, focusing on literary excellence and new talent from the region.
Batis’s list for 2026 includes novels, short stories, poetry in translation, memoir, and a book of botanical essays, all by South African writers. Most notable are the first UK editions of Blood’s Inner Rhyme (Summer 2026), a work of auto-fiction by celebrated Afrikaans author Antjie Krog, and Dayspring (February 2026), the posthumous memoir of poet and anti-apartheid activist C. J. Driver.
Batis’s other three confirmed titles for 2026 are Chatsworth (Spring 2026), a quirky collection of character-led short fiction centered on South Africa’s largest Indian township, by Stockholm-based writer Pravasan Pillay.
Batis will publish work from writers from or based in other Southern African countries, as well as writers from Scotland.

Right now, Batis is looking for writers from or living in Southern Africa or Scotland. They are also open to approaches for collections of poetry, short fiction, and narrative non-fiction. Your book must be unpublished in the United Kingdom and/or the Republic of Ireland.
