Lee & Low Books is the largest multicultural children’s book publisher in the United States.

Lee & Low Books was founded in 1991 by Chinese Americans Tom Low and Philip Lee. The company was started as a children’s book publisher specializing in books featuring people of color. At the time, it was one of just a few minority-owned publishing companies in the United States.

There was a void in children’s books at the time. Most of the books were targeted to Caucasians or contained animals or fairy tales. There was nothing dealing with contemporary issues and people of color.

Since 1991, Lee &Low has been an independent, certified 100% Minority Owned Business Enterprise (MBE), producing award-winning, high-quality books for every age. Their list includes books for beginning readers, picture books, early chapter books, middle grade, and young adult books, and a wide selection of bilingual and Spanish language titles.

Lee & Low Submissions

Text Submissions

Lee & Low is currently closed to unsolicited manuscript submissions until further notice. We included them here because they are one of the very best children’s books publishers around. Remember, you can always query.

They do, however, still accept agented submissions and projects from writers’ conferences that Lee & Low editors have attended. If you have a referral, that works too. They just need to keep the pipeline clear, that’s all.

Art Submissions

Lee & Low does consider art samples for picture books, graphic novels, and book jackets. You may send your sample to editorial@leeandlow.com.
