Do I Really Need a Million Followers to Get Published?

Right? But that’s what my agent said. Is that a million in total, or per platform? Either way, it’s completely undoable.

My agent told me, straight-up, that I need to have at least a million followers before a publisher will even look at me. Followers where?

So I did a survey of around 40 authors, all published by the Big 5, and whether they had much social media presence. The answer is: little to none.

These were not famous authors, but more entry level. Still, they were published by the big companies like SS and RH, and not only did they have little social media presence across the board, you could tell no attention was being paid to any of these accounts. So much for crowdspeak.

What does it matter? Nothing, really. The BIg 5 can do all their own marketing, no need for help from the author. My contention is that agents and editors are telling authors every day this line, and it’s just not true.

In fact, I even did a few of the very famous ones: They don’t care about social media, either.

Personally, I believe you should be working all the social medias and knocking on every door you can find. Just saying…

I have the excel file if anybody wants to see it.

Cheers
