Adivaani (the first voices) is a publishing house for indigenous expression and assertion, founded in 2012 in Kolkata, India. Adivaani is the proud voice for over 104 million indigenous people of India (Adivasi).
In April 2012, Ruby Hembrom attended a four month publishing course; and on being confronted by the absence of Adivasi representation decided she would do something about it. Adivaani became operational in July of that same year. Since then, they have published 19 books.
Adivaani is the first publisher of and by the indigenous people of India to publish in the English language.
Adivaani is a combination of Sanskrit word ‘adi’ meaning ‘first’, ‘original’, ‘ancient’ or ‘earliest’, and ‘vaani’ meaning ‘voice’. Adivaani translates to the ‘first voices’.

Adivaani Submissions
Adivaani welcomes all storytellers.
Adivaani aims to document and disseminate knowledge systems, tangible and intangible cultural facets of Adivasis in English and bi-lingual, creating a database of the authentic Adivasi voice, as recounted by them, using diverse multimedia channels, which can be accessible to indigenous people themselves.
