Profession of the Poet
In the hallway were the umbrellas, the galoshes, and
the mirror. In the mirror was the somewhat serene
window. In the window, the gate of the opposite
hospital. A long line of policemen and familiar
blood donors were there. The first ones had already
pulled up their sleeves, while in the operating room,
the five wounded men were already dead.

Yannis Ritsos (1909–1990) was a renowned Yannis Ritsos Biography on Poetry Foundation and prolific Yannis Ritsos on Britannica, widely celebrated as one of the greatest Greek poets of the 20th century Greek Reporter. He was a lifelong communist and activist whose work often explored political struggle, memory, and the human condition.
