Breakwater publishes award-winning writing in all literary genres: fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama, art, young adult and children’s books, as well as cookbooks, guidebooks and educational resources.
Breakwater is proud to have helped establish the literary careers of eminent writers such as Bernice Morgan, Kevin Major, Ray Guy, Mary Dalton, and more.

Breakwater Books Submissions
Unsolicited submissions welcome. Send just synopsis and sample chapters. Will request full ms if needed.
Breakwater Books publishes Canadian literary fiction and non-fiction, commercial fiction and non-fiction, poetry, drama, cookbooks, and children’s books. Their mandate is to publish the stories and authors of Newfoundland and Labrador, but they’re also interested in books by authors from all over.
Breakwater publishes four books of fiction each year. They focus on literary fiction, but sometimes publish compelling crime and suspense thrillers, as well as novels for young adults. They do not publish science fiction or fantasy.
Generally, they publish four non-fiction titles each year. Breakwater’s non-fiction focuses primarily, though not exclusively, on the people and history of Newfoundland and Labrador. While the historical work they choose requires meticulous research, they’re looking for writing that then has a more entertaining and informative style for a general audience.
Contemporary poetry titles usually come from authors who have published extensively in established literary journals and magazines.
Drama titles are usually only those that have already been produced and staged by a professional theatre company. They rarely publish scripts that have not been produced.
Breakwater publishes approximately three children’s titles each year.
